NOTE I.

Sur la page du titre, on lit dans le manuscrit de Notre-Dame de Paris la note suivante:

J'ai écrit les trois ou quatre premières pages de Notre-Dame de Paris le 25 Juillet 1830. La révolution de juillet m'interrompit. Puis ma chère petite Adèle vint au monde (Qu'elle soit bénie!). Je me remis à écrire Notre-Dame de Paris le 1er Septembre, et l'ouvrage fut terminé le 15 Janvier 1831.

Le chapitre I, la Grand'Salle, commençait ainsi dans le manuscrit:

«Il y a aujourd'hui, vingt-cinq Juillet 1830, trois cent quarante-huit ans six mois et dix-neufs jours, etc.»

Les mots vingt-cinq Juillet 1830 ont été biffés.

La date 1er septembre, se trouve avant l'alinéa: «S'il pouvait nous être donné, à nous hommes de 1830, etc.»

Au bas de la dernière page, on lit: 15 janvier 1831, 6 heures ½ du soir.


NOTE II.

Le manuscrit de Notre-Dame de Paris n'a presque pas de ratures. Il n'y a guère à y signaler de variantes que dans quelques titres de chapitres.

Le chapitre Histoire d'une galette au levain de maïs était d'abord intitulé: Histoire de l'enfant de la fille de joie.

Le chapitre Qu'un prêtre et un philosophe sont deux, Le philosophe marié.

Le chapitre Le petit soulier, La chèvre est sauvée.
